The musicians in The How, hailing from Rochester, New York is a super group. Each member brings a unique musical aesthetic to the band and is known for their extended improvisational takes on classic psychedelic rock songs.
The How's music ranges from Classic Psychedelic, Blues & Rock to original tunes, and a uniquely crafted blend of music. They possess a great love and reverence for the music of The Grateful Dead, Santana, Dylan, Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and associated Classic Psychedelic Rock and Blues. The group gathers and supports this special feeling of community, unique to this genre of music.
While The How is not a “tribute band” – they do their part to recreate the sound and feel of the journey. They do perform an extensive repertoire of songs written and performed by many of the classic artists of that era. The How’s approach to this music honors the original essence, feel and vibe of these beloved songs while creating new interpretations that will surprise and delight any audience. With their dynamic, smart, and adventurous improvisational jams true to the spirit of the originals.
Who is playing those impressive lead guitar riffs you ask? That is lead guitarist, David J Wingrove. A true musician playing for over 50 years. A solid and gifted guitarist. If you’re a local you may have remembered “Natty Bumpo”, “Entropy”, “The Bangs Road Band”,” All of the Above” now Dave shines in the band “The How” or his other favorite band “Terrapin Society” if you don’t see Dave there, he plays in the Church Praise Group, or you will see him at the Johnny’s Open Mic. You may often hear him say “We are “The How” and will try not to break anything” his way of saying “We love to push the envelope! He writes music and sings and can play the tastiest and most heartfelt leads that nobody ever gets tired of listening to, his ear and heart are one with the music.
Arty Broer; Bass Player Extraordinaire! With the vocals of Neil Young and that generation. A sweet attentive player who has his roots in early Grateful Dead jam band “Natty Bumpo” among countless others… his 50 plus years of playing really brings a flow, a bottom and a gel to the sound of “The How” like all the other musicians in the band Arty when not playing his “artful” bass with “The How” is playing with “Captain Jinks and The Horse Marines” he is a truly devoted to his passion of music and friendship.
Shawn Patrick Casey on rhythm guitar. He’s been playing his guitar for 50 years with multiple bands “Entropy”, “Bangs Road Band”, “All of the Above”, “1916”, “Himself”, “The Dungarees”, “Celtic Soul”, “Garden of Headons” and his Favorite band “The How''. He is immersed in the sounds of Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Clapton, and Irish session music, classic Rock and Blues and anything with a psychedelic flare. An avid organizer and his toe in everything community related, he enjoys giving back for all his blessings. You can find him at Johnny’s Open Mic every 2nd Monday on Culver Road, or a session almost anywhere!
Peek around to the back and you will see Ryan Scott Russell on drums and percussion. He's played drums his whole life. Ryan has spent a lifetime chasing the heartbeat of the universe and expressing it wonderfully. The man just loves to play! His beats drip with style, his groove is solid, and his expression is both intricate and dynamic. *Chimes*. In addition to The How, he's always got fingers in several musical pots. Current projects and bands include Zero To Ballistic, the Good Kind & Stregheria. Aside from his endeavors as a rock drummer, he is a member of the West African drum & dance company "Atebayilla" and is also the Music Director & Accompanist for Dance at Hobart and William Smith College. Ryan has toured in many bands across the country over the years, such as Frame of Mind and Worms Union. Ryan also has a solo album, " I Am the Instrument", which he composed and recorded entirely by himself. And always next to him behind the kit is Spirit the service dog, having a snooze till set break.
Together, their individuality meshes into just the right blend: “The How”. Come sit a spell and listen. Bring a friend or two… or twenty-two, when “The How” is on the stage there is sure to be an epic time and they love to share their music with you.
